10 Curiosities about EUA (California)

Forma de estacionar em San Francisco
Em San Francisco a maioria das ruas são (muito) inclinadas e por isso é obrigatório estacionar o carro com os pneus virados para o passeio como vêem na fotografia. Se o carro descair por alguma razão, vai contra o passeio e isto evita estragos maiores. Segundo percebi esta forma de estacionar é obrigatória e com direito a multa, mas não tenho a certeza absoluta. Pelo sim, pelo não, se forem a San Francisco estacionem o carro assim! :)

How to park in San Francisco
In San Francisco most of the streets are (very) steeped and so it is mandatory to park the car with the tires facing the ride as you see in the picture below. If the car goes down for some reason, it goes against the sidewalk and this prevents further damages. As I understood this form of parking is mandatory and entitled to a fine, but I am not absolutely sure. In any case, if you go to San Francisco park the car like that! :)

Placas a dizer "Ped xing"
Estas placas foram uma das coisas que mais me incomodou durante a viagem (quase) toda. Ped Xing? Mas o que raio quer dizer Ped Xing? Dei mil voltas à cabeça, pensei em em mil possibilidades diferentes mas nenhuma se aproximou do verdadeiro significado. Fui gozada um bocadinho e venho ser vossa amiga para que não passem pelas mesmas figuras:

Ped = Pedestrian (pedestres) e até aqui tudo bem!

Xing = Cross (X - cruz) + ing » Crossing (atravessar)

Tchanannnnn! Ped Xing = Pedestrian Crossing. Até tem sentido, mas não cheguei lá.

Signs saying "Ped xing"
These signes were one of the things that bothered me the most during the (almost) entire trip. Ped Xing? But what the hell does Ped Xing mean? I thought of a thousand different possibilities but none approached the true meaning. As your friend, I come to tell you what it means so that people do not make fun of you :) :

Ped = Pedestrian and so far so good!

Xing = Cross (X - cross) + ing » Crossing 

Tchanannnnn! Ped Xing = Pedestrian Crossing. It makes perfect sense, but I couldn't put this two together.

Virar à direita com o sinal vermelho
Nos EUA é permitido virar à direita mesmo que o sinal esteja vermelho para ir em frente. A faixa para virar à direita tem um sinal de prioridade que tem que ser respeitado, mas é livre de passagem, excepto se um sinal disser algo em contrário. Não acreditam? Experimentem parar que vão levar com umas buzinadelas.
Foi algo meio estranho ao inicio, mas que até faz bastante sentido e evita filas. Um ponto para os Americanos!

Turn right at the red light
In the USA it is allowed to turn right even if the traffic light is red to go forward. The road to turn right has a "give" priority signal that has to be respected, but is always alowed to turn right unless a signal says otherwise. You do not believe? Try to stop there and you will get a few honks.
It was kind of weird at first, but that even makes a lot of sense and avoids queues. A point for the Americans!



Água de borla
Quando vão a um restaurante a água é de borla. Sim, de borla. É da torneira, claro, mas podem pedir um prato e um copo de água que ninguém faz cara estranha ou ninguém vos faz sentir como se tivessem acabado de cometer um crime. Por vezes até vos servem a água mesmo sem pedirem. E mais? É infinita. Não é cá um copito de água. São três ou quatro se assim o quiserem. Mas vá, não exagerem muito e não sequem o planeta com tanta água de borla sim?

Free water
When they go to a restaurant the water is free. Yes, it's free. It's tap water, of course, but you can order a plate and a glass of water that no one makes a strange face or no one makes you feel like you've just committed a crime. Sometimes they even serve you water without asking. And more? It is unlimited. It's not just a glass of water, it's three or four if you wish it. But do not exaggerate much and do not dry the planet with so much free water ok?

Drive thru no Starbucks
Isso mesmo. O Starbucks tem drive thru. Aliás, tudo tem drive thru. Chegámos até a ver um drive thru num multibanco.
A principio pensei "Eish que grandas preguiçosos", tudo para não mexerem o rabito, mas a verdade é que por vezes até dá jeito, principalmente naqueles dias que estão com pressa ou está um gelo lá fora que não se pode. Confesso, fui full americana no que toca a drive thru. Que preguiçosa, é verdade, mas não me importava nada de ter uns starbucks por cá com drive thru também. :)

Exactly. Starbucks has drive thru. Actually, everything has drive thru. We even saw a drive thru at an ATM.
At first I thought "Eish they are too lazy", but the truth is that sometimes it's actually nice to have a drive thru, especially on those days we are in a hurry or when it is freezing outside. I confess, I was full American when it came to drive thru. I'm lazy, it's true, and I would not mind to have a Starbucks around here with drive thru as well. :)



Lyft
Lyft é uma empresa do género Uber, mas bastante mais barata. Nós não conseguimos usar Uber por lá, por alguma razão a aplicação deles não aceitou o nosso cartão, mas não tivemos qualquer tipo de problema com a Lyft. Funcionou bem, foi bastante em conta, os motoristas que apanhámos eram bastante simpáticos e se lá voltar, é só Lyft que vou usar.

Lyft
Lyft is a company like Uber, but much cheaper. We could not use Uber over there, for some reason their application did not accept our card, but we did not have any problems with Lyft. It worked well, it was cheaper, the drivers were very friendly and if we go back there, we will only use Lyft.



Simpatia nos restaurantes e cafés
É mesmo verdade. As pessoas são super simpáticas e atenciosas com os clientes. Uma simpatia muito diferente da simpatia em Portugal. É verdade que o fazem porque dependem das gorjetas do cliente, mas não deixa de ser agradável ser tão bem acolhido. Desde o "bom dia" com um sorriso na cara, à conversa se estivermos para aí virados e até aos concelhos no que comer. Foi bom, foi muito bom. Até tivemos quem tentasse falar francês connosco (porque confundiu o português com o francês, mas ainda assim, uma atitude super querida).

Kindness in restaurants and cafes
It's realy true. The people are super friendly and caring to the customers. A very different friendliness from the one in Portugal. It is true that they do so because they depend on the client's tips, but it is nevertheless pleasant to be so welcomed. From the "good morning" with a smile on the face, to the conversation and to the councils in what to eat. It was good, it was very good. There was even someone who tried to speak French with us (because she confused Portuguese with French, but still, a super-sweet attitude).

Conduzir nos EUA
É super fácil. Pelo menos na Califórnia. As estradas são super largas, tudo está super bem organizado, as pessoas respeitam imenso as regras do código, não se vê pessoas a apitar ou a passar pela direita que nem uns malucos.
Isto trás-me ao próximo ponto:

Driving in the USA
It's super easy. At least in California. The roads are super wide, everything is super well organized, people respect the rules of the code, you do not see people honking or passing through the right.
This brings me to the next point:

Cruzamentos com 4 stops
Em San Francisco haviam cruzamentos com 4 stops. Toda a gente tinha que parar. Então mas e como é que se sabia a prioridade? Não era quem estava a direita, mas sim quem tinha parado primeiro. Por exemplo: O carro A parava no stop, eu parava a seguir e a seguir chegava o carro B, a ordem de passagem seria: Primeiro o carro A, depois eu e depois o carro B. Mesmo que a diferença entre nós fosse de segundos, era assim que a coisa funcionava e toda a gente respeitava e consequentemente não havia qualquer tipo de problema. O stop lá significa realmente parar, não há ninguém que não pare.
Isto leva-me ao meu último ponto:

Crossings with 4 stops
In San Francisco there were crossings with 4 stops. Everyone had to stop. So, how did you know the priority? It was not who was on the right, but who had stopped first. For example: Car A stops at the stop, I stop next and then Car B arrives, the order of passage would be: First the car A, then me and then the car B. Even if the difference between us was seconds, that was how it worked and everybody respected it and consequently there was no problem whatsoever. The stops there really means stop, there is no one who does not stop.
This brings me to my last point:



Reis da civilização na estrada
Se calhar nós temos um bocado a mania que somos os reis da civilização, mas a verdade é que os americanos, pelo menos na Califórnia, batem-nos às milhas. A diferença é gigantesca, eles são muito mais civilizados na estrada do que nós aqui. Respeitam as regras e respeitam o outro. Ou talvez tenhamos tido muita sorte e não apanhámos um único maluco enquanto lá estávamos. Mas acredito que não, que temos muito que aprender com eles. E é por isso que viajar é tão bom: aprendemos tanto com as culturas que visitamos e aprendemos sobretudo que há sempre alguém melhor que nós e que temos sempre pontos a melhorar.

Kings of Civilization on the Road

Maybe we have a little mania that we are the kings of civilization, but the truth is that Americans, at least in California, beat us for miles. The difference is gigantic, they are much more civilized on the road than we are here. They respect the rules and respect each other. Or maybe we were lucky, and we did not catch a single crazy person while we were there. But I don't believe it, I believe we have much to learn from them. And that is why traveling is so good: we learn so much from the cultures we visit and above all we learn that there is always someone better than us and that we always have points to improve.
